The Youth Hunter’s Academy is a four year progressive learning program held for one week each summer at the Craig Family Camp in Owensburg, Indiana. The Academy is a merit-based, leadership program that serves to mentor our youth on skills necessary to make them not only better hunters, shooters, and trappers, but to assist them with a structured environment designed to develop leadership skills, promote self confidence, and drive self esteem. The Academy is focused on the importance of conservation, preservation and mental preparedness. These are principle components of our teaching philosophy and these principles are reinforced throughout a Cadet’s training.

Each summer, while building on the foundations established during the previous year, returning cadets may advance to a higher level of education in hunting, shooting, and survival skills. The Academy covers the most extensive hunting & shooting curriculum offered to youth hunters.

The cost for the academy is $360 for the week. This covers meals, lodging, t-shirt, water bottle, ammunition, and their Indiana Hunter Education Certification, if needed.

The Academy is designed to test our youth and challenge their skills. Written merit exams are provided for Cadets wishing to earn badges in specific hunting and shooting categories. In addition to written exams, Cadets may also qualify for additional merit awards through their shooting performance in Shotgun, Rifle, Pistol, Muzzleloader, Archery, Crossbow and much more. These tests and their standards are very challenging and our Cadets gain a true sense of accomplishment when they have qualified for a particular Merit Range Test (MRT).

Children may also receive their Indiana Hunter Education Certification while attending the Academy. Backwater Legacies Inc. is staffed with qualified Indiana Hunter Education instructors. The course is provided throughout the week with live-fire range lessons and written exams given on the last day.

Boy Scouts may also earn their merit badges for scouting while attending the Academy. Backwater Legacies Inc. is staffed with Boy Scout Merit Counselors for Shotgun, Rifle, and Archery.

Activities are offered each evening as well as optional devotions. The Academy is a terrific opportunity for our youth to interact, establish lifetime relationships, gain self esteem, and to develop leadership skills necessary to ensure our hunting heritage and the preservation of our resources will continue for generations to come.
